Announcement: Spokane City Council to consider adoption of Clean Water Plan

Message from Marlene Feist, City of Spokane:

Good morning everyone,

Many of you have been following our work to develop an Integrated Clean Water Plan to improve the health of the Spokane River.  Today, I would like to share a copy of that plan and its executive summary.

This plan is the culmination of more than a year’s worth of work. We have been to many groups and talked to many citizens during that time and generally have found consensus with our plan, which is designed to be both environmentally and financially responsible.

The plan details $310 million worth of work, but that’s some $150 million less than would have been anticipated under previous plans, and it provides magnitudes greater pollution reduction for the river.

The City Council will consider a resolution to adopt the plan on Monday, May 5, at the regular 6 p.m. legislative meeting in City Council Chambers in the lower level of City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.

The public is invited to comment on the plan during the meeting, and we will also hold an open house to provide information between 4:30 and 6 p.m. in the Chase Gallery, just outside Council Chambers.

I would like to invite you to attend and participate.  The news release with the details of the meeting and open house is attached as well.

After the City officially adopts the Integrated Clean Water Plan, we will officially submit the plan to both the state Department of Ecology and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

We are continuing to seek a financial partnership to complete all the work in the plan, some of which is not mandated but just makes sense for the health of the river.

I hope we will see some of you on Monday.  Please let me know if you have questions after reviewing these materials.

Warmest regards,
Marlene
